The development of artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to perform complex analyses and offer various solutions when faced with ethical dilemmas. This study investigates how AI can be used in ethical decision-making processes and compares these processes with human ethical decisions. It focuses on fundamental questions such as how AI systems can encode ethical principles, how these principles can be applied to different situations, and whether these processes should be under human supervision.
Large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT demonstrate their functionality through mathematical modeling and calculations based on large datasets, and they improve through feedback. Since LLMs require user feedback, they can evolve with use (prompt engineering). Therefore, research on AI's role in resolving ethical dilemmas observes that criteria like AI's content generation or response speed can provide useful results in a limited context.
Methodologically, issues with AI usage become apparent with modern marketing techniques that draw an analogy between the human mind-body and the machine's hardware-software. The human mind is cultural and intersubjective to some extent. The human intellect is creative and can form new connections and concepts without the need for large datasets. While AI language models work by establishing correlations through datasets, humans establish causality and meaning with their extensive mental capabilities and imagination. However, large technology companies manipulate human memory and thinking abilities through platform capitalism and the attention economy. In this context, the role of AI in resolving ethical dilemmas and how these processes align with human ethical decisions are discussed.
