Açıklama

Kazuo Ishiguro’s Klara and the Sun (2021) centres on the interaction between humans and robots, a prevalent topic in dystopic narratives that envisage a posthuman world, yet it diverges from dystopic narratvies on similar themes by placing a significant emphasis on emotional intelligence, employing the artificial intelligence character, Klara, as the narrator. The novel is a memoir from the perspective of Klara, an Artficial Friend, who tries to recollect her memories with both humans and other humanoids. In addition to her highly advanced observation skills and ability to anaylse and response to human emotions, the act of recollecting memories and remembering others implies a sense of nostalgia which constitutes Klara as an autonomous and social entity with emotions rather than an intelligent machine. Therefore, intersubjectivity has an important place in the novel to comprehend the impact of human-robot relationship on both sides. Research on human-robot interaction often suggests that intersubjectivity fosters a reciprocal process wherein both the emotional capacity of humans and robots evolve. On the other hand, Klara and the Sun presents a different perspective, suggesting that positive human feelings towards nonhuman entities are comparatively weaker than the advanced emotional capacity demonstrated by Klara during their interactions. The novel ultimately implies that neither artificial intelligence nor technological advancements constitue a dystopian society. Instead, it suggests that the negative, complex, or skeptical human attitudes towards them lead to dystopian outcomes. As a nonhuman narrator, Klara functions as a mirror, reflecting the contemporary human condition through the lens of an artificial being, thus providing a different angle on humans’ affective approach towards nonhuman entities. In this context, the present study aims to explore the intersubjectivity in Klara and the Sun through the lens of emotional intelligence, arguing that the novel offers a new perspective on the representation of human-robot relationship in contemporary fiction.
