Description

Buchi Emecheta (1944–2017), a prominent African novelist and influential feminist voice, offers a comprehensive portrayal of African women’s experiences through her eight novels. In her semi-autobiographical debut novel, In the Ditch (1972), Emecheta presents nuanced feminine perspectives on poverty, sexism, and classism, while also addressing themes of racism, injustice, and female independence. The novel’s protagonist, Adah Obi—whose life closely mirrors Emecheta’s own—marries at seventeen, immigrates to England with her husband, subsequently divorces, and is left to raise five children as a single mother. She faces persistent impoverishment and strives to overcome the manifold adversities endemic to a postcolonial context. The narrative centers on Adah's forced immersion into the dehumanizing environment of the British welfare system, chronicling her efforts to support and nurture her children independently. Through Adah's characterization, Emecheta elucidates the lived realities of Nigerian women and underscores their agency in navigating social constraints. As an ambitious sociology student and civil service librarian at the British Museum, Adah confronts a spectrum of crises, including financial, social, cultural, and psychological. The concept of permacrisis, denoting a state of ongoing and profound instability and/or turmoil, is explored through the lens of an immigrant woman’s identity in the narrative. Thus, this paper examines the multifaceted nature of both contemporary and historical permacrises, as well as their representation within the novel, particularly as they intersect with the dynamics of poverty, sexism, and classism across African and British cultural contexts.
