Description

Community Interpreting is a context of interpreting refers to the provision of public and community services to foreigners, refugees, tourists or any beneficiary in a community with language barrier in terms of reaching fundamental services in healthcare, police and law enforcement, court and crisis and emergency settings. This presentation aims at providing an overview of the Turkish and Spanish contexts of Community Interpreting with regard to the sub-contexts and development of the profession in both countries to be able to offer possible areas of collaboration based on the strengths of contexts and settings in each country. After defining the basic terms and concepts of Community Interpreting (Court Interpreting, Healthcare Interpreting, Public Service Interpreting, Police and Law Enforcement Interpreting, Sign Language Interpreting, Emergency and Disaster Interpreting) the background of each setting will be provided for Türkiye and Spain alongwith the literature and studies academic and scientific concerning the settings in question. The conclusions are drawn based on the similar and dissimilar community interpreting sub-fields and service users in both countries such as refugees, foreigners and their need for interpreting services.
